Nobody likes to think about it, but it's always a possibility that your beloved dog could be injured when you are away from home. Thinking ahead and putting together a dog first aid kit will allow you to safely treat minor injuries yourself when you are away from home. Perhaps even more importantly, in the case of a major illness or injury, the same kit will give you the tools to keep your pet safe and comfortable until you get her to a veterinary center.
When putting together a dog first aid kit, consider including the following items:
Home First Aid Kit
Pack your first aid supplies in a case that is waterproof or water-resistant.
Tweezers Cotton balls Gauze pads and gauze wrap in a variety of sizes Sizzors Adhesive tape, preferably the self-sticking kind that won't stick to the animal's hair Hydrogen peroxide Antibiotic cream Latex gloves, which you should use before treating any wounds A blanket, which can be used to keep your injured pet warm to ward off shock as well as holding him still. A muzzle (better safe than sorry) An eye-dropper A cold pack A list of all your pets medications including dosages
Many vets will also suggest that you keep a bottle of ipecac syrup in your pet emergency kit to induce vomiting in case of poisoning. Another over the counter medication that should be consider keeping in your dog first aid kit is Benedryl to treat an allergic reaction or insect bite. Ask your vet for instructions and proper dosages.
It's a good idea to put the business card of your vet in the first aid kit, too. If an emergency happens while you are traveling with pets and away from home, you'll be glad to have it nearby.
