Why You Need a First Aid Kit

Imagine that an earthquake has occurred nearby. In your location, you could feel the earthquake and are taken by surprise. First you'll think about the safety of your family. You hope that your house will not collapse upon your family and you. After the first shock you are thankful that all are alive. However, the roads to your neighborhood has been significantly damaged. You are literally trapped in your neighborhood. You know that you will not receive any external help. What would you do in such a situation if a family member of yours has been injured?

It is simply not realistic to think that it won't happen to your family and you. A simple accident during a camping trip can lead to an emergency. Untreated bleeding can be fatal within minutes and simple first aid can help a casualty to stay alive until professional medical help is available. Before an emergency actually occurs, people should prepare themselves.

What first aid items do people really need?

The easiest way to have everything that you'll probably need, is to buy an already assembled first aid kit. These kits will have all basic items like tape, gauze, sponges, adhesive strips, bandages, antibiotics, tweezers, burn dressings and lotions, itch creams, arm splints, thermometers, scissors, safety pins, antiseptic towelettes, pain reliever, ice packs, ammonia inhalants, alcohol, eye washes, and many more items.

You should add to this list all prescription medication that your family and you may need for treating diabetes, asthma, arrhythmia, depression or other chronic conditions. It is advisable to have them in stock for some weeks, since you never know what will happen. If emergencies were predictable they wouldn't be emergencies.

You will find first aid kits of all prices, sizes and shapes. Some kits are specially assembled for specific needs like elderly people or children; others are designed for more specific purposes, like camping into the wild or sailing.

Simply remember to check carefully that your kit has everything that you may need in your location and to know exactly what you have in the kit and how to use it. Don't overload it. Everything should be as easily accessible as possible. Keep your first aid kit at hand in your backpack, house, and trunk of your car. Avoid putting it in the attic or basement.

It is extremely unpleasant to think about emergencies, but you know that emergencies happen. They also happen in your area. Yes, you do need an emergency first aid kit.
